Approximately 400 volunteers form the nucleus of Fauquier County's fire and rescue services. They have enabled the county program to sustain a volunteer fire and rescue system that includes 13 local companies.

The fire and rescue squads receive funding through a county "fire and rescue tax" of 7 cents per $100 of assessed real estate value. The volunteer companies rely on the generosity of the citizenry for the remainder of their budgets, raising funds through donations, raffles, breakfasts, dinners and carnivals.
Coordinator Philip Myer manages Fauquier's 15 salaried firefighter/paramedics, who help provide daytime coverage. He also directs the county's response to hazardous materials spills and helps to control potential disasters.

Director of Warrenton-Fauquier Joint Communications Susan Powles handles the county's emergency response system and all incoming calls from the fire, rescue and police departments at the dispatch center.

William Grimsley is president of the Fauquier County Fire and Rescue Association. The organization is responsible for training most volunteers.

A northern portion of Fauquier County is protected by the Linden Volunteer Fire Department in Warren County.
